In 1940 experimental all-wheel drive car GAZ-61 was created on the basis of GAZ-М1 units. Because of some reasons the off-road car didn't become serial, but the project of all-wheel drive car for army was developed in SATI. R-1 was based on the chassis of already mastered GAZ-М1 and GAZ-MM and had a body with cutouts instead of doors.
Because of unreliability of a design in February March, 1941. R-1 was advanced in design office of GAZ and put on the conveyer as GAZ-64, but because of lines of essential defects, such as a weak frame, a narrow track and insufficient stability the car didn't get distribution. Therefore in 1942 and 1943 it was twice modernized by group of designers led by Vitaly Andreevich Grachyov. At an The track of the off-road car GAZ-67 was expanded from 1250 up to 1446 mm, that at once positively affected to stability.
After one more modernization it received an index GAZ-67B. This car received a wide circulation. The car could haul the trailer in weight up to ton, its height with the folded awning and the lowered windshield was only 1,3 meters that was important for masking. The jeep was produced till 1953 and was made in quantity of about 63000 pieces.
