In spring of 1943 secretly from administration engineers of GAZ prepared projects of the new passenger car. Now it was necessary to work the project in all details and to create pre-production models. «Victory» was essentially new car. The basic novelty consisted in a body. At the first time in our country «Victory» body became bearing, that let essentially to reduce weight of the car. Thus GAZ-20 was comfortable car with soft wheels suspension, with fanning and heating, with excellent maneuverability and powerful brakes.
Honour of "Victory" creation belongs first of all to Andrey Aleksandrovich Lipgart at that time he was main designer of GAZ. «Victory» became first-ever mass production car with a body of the streamline form without projecting of fenders. The body style of GAZ-20 was offered by young designer V. Samoilov. Soon in many foreign countries cars with the configuration repeating nationally produced «Victory» began to appear.
In 1955 GAZ-20 «Victory» was modernized and received an index GAZ-20В. From now the car had a radio receiver and the improved upholstery of passenger compartment. On the conveyor GAZ «Victory» was held on two years more and it was replaced with «Volga» GAZ-21. In total for 13 years of manufacture the factory manufactured about 236000 «Victories». Since 1955 till 1974 GAZ-20 was made under the license in Poland under trademark FSO Warsava 201.
